Muslim extremists in Somalia
enforce brutal sharia law

Islamic extremists in Somalia are beginning to enforce the brutal aspects of Sharia law. In March, Somalia's cabinet voted to implement it throughout their country.

They're responding to a recent case involving thieves who were punished by amputation. The punishment was carried out by members of al-Shabaab, an Arabic word meaning "The Lads," who follow a strict version of Sharia law.

Al-Shabaad also took credit for the assasination of two legislators, the country's security minister, a member of parliament, and 30 others. According to Compass Direct, it is clear Al-Shabaab has no intention of backing down but every intention of extending its rule politically and spiritually across Somalia.

The Open Doors team expressed concerns over the severity of the punishment for petty crime, wondering what it would be for forsaking Islam. The following story could likely be that answer:

Islamic extremists beheaded two young boys in Somalia because their Christian father refused to divulge information about a church leader; the killers are searching Kenya's refugee camps to do the same to the boys' father.

Across the country, evangelism is frowned upon and in many areas, prohibited. Somalia is almost exclusively Sunni Muslim, with 0.05 percent of the population Christian. The persecution of Christians is severe in most regions of Somalia, and many have fled to neighbouring countries.

Only a handful of Somalis are Christians, practicing their faith in secret.

Feds Issue Terror Watch for the Texas/Mexico Border

The Department of Homeland Security is alerting Texas authorities to be on the lookout for a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist group who might be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico, a security expert who has seen the memo tells FOXNews.com.

The warning follows an indictment unsealed this month in Texas federal court that accuses a Somali man in Texas of running a “large-scale smuggling enterprise” responsible for bringing hundreds of Somalis from Brazil through South America and eventually across the Mexican border. Many of the illegal immigrants, who court records say were given fake IDs, are alleged to have ties to other now-defunct Somalian terror organizations that have merged with active organizations like Al Shabaab, al-Barakat and Al-Ittihad Al-Islami.

In 2008, the U.S. government designated Al Shabaab a terrorist organization. Al Shabaab has said its priority is to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, on Somalia; the group has aligned itself with Al Qaeda and has made statements about its intent to harm the United States.

In recent years, American Somalis have been recruited by Al Shabaab to travel to Somalia, where they are often radicalized by more extremist or operational anti-American terror groups, which Al Shabaab supports. The recruiters coming through the Mexican border are the ones who could be the most dangerous, according to law enforcement officials.

Security experts tell FOXNews.com that the influx of hundreds of Somalis over the U.S. border who allegedly have ties to suspected terror cells is evidence of a porous and unsecured border being exploited by groups intent on wrecking deadly havoc on American soil.

The DHS alert was issued to police and sheriff’s deputies in Houston, asking them to keep their eyes open for a Somali man named Mohamed Ali who is believed to be in Mexico preparing to make the illegal crossing into Texas. Officials believe Ali has ties to Al Shabaab, a Somali terrorist organization aligned with Al Qaeda, said Joan Neuhaus Schaan, the homeland security and terrorism fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute, who has seen the alert.

An indictment was unsealed in Texas federal court earlier this month that revealed that a Somali man, Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane, led a human smuggling ring that brought East Africans, including Somalis with ties to terror groups, from Brazil and across the Mexican border and into Texas.

In a separate case, Anthony Joseph Tracy, of Virginia, who admitted to having ties to Al Shabaab, is currently being prosecuted for his alleged role in an international ring that illegally brought more than 200 Somalis across the Mexican border. Prosecutors say Tracy used his Kenya-based travel business as a cover to fraudulently obtain Cuban travel documents for the Somalis. The smuggled Somalis are believed to have spread out across the United States and remain mostly at large, court records show.

Somalis are classified by border and immigration officials as “special interest” — illegal immigrants who get caught trying to cross the Mexican border into the U.S. who come from countries that are considered a high threat to the U.S., Neuhaus Schaan explained.

DHS did not respond to multiple e-mail and phone requests for comment.

In addition to the Somali immigration issue, Mexican smugglers are coaching some Middle Eastern immigrants before they cross the border – schooling them on how to dress and giving them phrases to help them look and sound like Latinos, law enforcement sources told FoxNews.com.

“There have been a number of certain communities that have noticed this, villages in northern Mexico where Middle Easterners try to move into town and learn Spanish,” Neuhaus Schaan said. “People were changing there names from Middle Eastern names to Hispanic names.”

Security experts say the push by illegal immigrants to try to fit in also could be the realization of what officials have feared for years: Latin American drug cartels are helping jihadist groups bring terrorists across the Mexican border.

J. Peter Pham, senior fellow and director of the Africa Project at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, said that for the past ten years there’s been suspicion by U.S. law enforcement that drug cartels could align with international terrorist organizations to bring would-be-jihadists into the U.S.

That kind of collaboration is already being seen in Africa, said Dr. Walid Phares, director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.

“Al Qaeda could easily say, “Ok, now we want your help getting these guys into the United States,” Phares said. “Eventually the federal government will pay more attention, but there is a window of time now where they can get anyone they want to get in already.”

Experts also say the DHS alert and recent court case highlights the threat of terrorists penetrating the Mexican/Texas border — and the growing threat of Somali recruitment efforts to bring Americans of Somali descent back to Somalia for jihadist training, creating homegrown terrorists.

Pham says the DHS alert comes too late. “They’re just covering themselves for the fact that DHS has been failing to date to deal effectively with this,” he said. “They’re already here.”

Michael Weinstein, a political science professor at Purdue University and an expert on Somalia, said, “In the past year, it’s become obvious that there’s a spillover into the United States of the transnational revolutionaries in Somalia.”

“It’s something that certainly has to be watched, but I don’t think it’s an imminent threat,” he said. “This has to be put in context with people smuggling — everybody and their brother is getting into the United States through Mexico; I read last week that some Chinese were crossing, it’s just a big market.”

Pham disagrees. “The real danger is ‘something along the lines of jihadist version of ‘find a classmate,’ he said, referring to Al Shabaab’s potential to set up sleeper cells in the U.S. “Most of them rely on personal referral and association. That type of social networking is not beyond their capabilities.”

Pham says the DHS alert is too little, too late.

“This is like shutting the barn door after the horses got away,” he said.

Authorities Watch For Suspected Terrorist

KHOU News in Houston Texas reports that a Homeland Security Alert is asking local authorities to keep their eyes open for a potential terror suspect. According to the report the alert focuses on a suspected member of the terrorist group Al Shabaab and indicates he may be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico.

Al Shabaab is a terrorist group based in Somalia with links to the Somali attacks dramatized in the movie “Blackhawk Down.” A few months ago, it announced its allegiance to Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden.

The report points out that the route from Somalia to Texas is shorter than many Americans might think, with smugglers traveling through Mexico to reach the U.S. Two weeks ago, a federal indictment was filed in San Antonio against a Somali citizen. It alleges the suspect led a “large scale smuggling enterprise,” moving east Africans into the U.S., including members of a terrorist group AIAI. (more on this story below)

Somalian Charged with Making False Statements on Application for Asylum
Defendant is Accused of Making False Statements Concerning Participation in Terrorist Organizations

Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane is charged with two counts of making false statements to federal authorities. The first count alleges that Dhakane omitted his involvement with Somali commercial enterprise Al-Barakat and AIAI, both listed as Specially Designated Terrorist entities, on his 2008 application for asylum.

According to a second count, Dhakane also lied about how he got into United States. The indictment alleges that he did not disclose that he “participated in and later ran a large-scale human smuggling enterprise out of Brazil.” The U.S. government says the enterprise is responsible for smuggling hundreds of AIAI affiliated Somalis and other East Africans into the United States.

On March 28, 2008, Dhakane surrendered to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents near Brownsville, Texas. He was being held in an Immigration Detention Facility located in Pearsall, Texas, when he allegedly made the false statements to federal authorities.

Upon conviction, Dhakane faces up to 10 years in federal prison per count.

This case was investigated by agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Department of Homeland Security. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Roomberg is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

An indictment is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven in guilty in a court of law.

NJ men accused of trying to join Somali terrorists

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J.— Two New Jersey men who envisioned a terrorist attack in the U.S. with a body count twice that of the Fort Hood massacre were arrested at a gate New York's Kennedy Airport as they were about to board flights on their way to Somalia to seek terror training from al-Qaida-affiliated jihadists, officials said.

Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, 20, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 26, were arrested Saturday before they could board separate flights to Egypt and then continue on to Somalia, federal officials in New Jersey and the New York Police Department said.

Law enforcement became aware of the men in the fall of 2006, after receiving a tip. New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said they had traveled to Jordan in 2007 and tried to get into Iraq, but were turned back by their would-be recruiters.

Since then, during the lengthy investigation, an NYPD undercover officer recorded conversations with the men in which they spoke about jihad against Americans.

"I leave this time. God willing, I never come back," authorities say Alessa told the officer last year. "Only way I would come back here is if I was in the land of jihad and the leader ordered me to come back here and do something here. Ah, I love that."

Alessa also was allegedly recorded telling Almonte that he would outdo Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, last year.

"He's not better than me. I'll do twice what he did," Alessa allegedly said.

Kelly said Alessa, of North Bergen, and Almonte, of Elmwood Park, are American citizens. Alessa was born in the United States and is of Palestinian descent. Almonte is a naturalized citizen who was born in the Dominican Republic.

They are the latest of many Americans or immigrants to the U.S. accused of joining or trying to join al-Shabab, a violent extremist group based in Somalia and connected to al-Qaida. Al-Shabab was designated by the U.S. as a terrorist group in 2008.

Investigators say they're also among many U.S. terrorism suspects to have been inspired by two well-known U.S. citizens who have recruited terrorists through the Internet: Adam Gadahn, an al-Qaida spokesman in Pakistan, and Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical al-Qaida cleric hiding in Yemen who is believed to have helped inspire recent attacks including the Fort Hood shooting, the Times Square bombing attempt and the failed Christmas Day airline bombing.

Kelly on Sunday cited the "excellent work" done by the undercover officer, who Kelly said was of Egyptian descent and in his mid-20s.

No one answered the door at Almonte's house and the blinds were drawn. A man who said he was Almonte's father walked into the home shortly before 1 p.m. with another man.

"I'm very confused by all this. He's my son," he said before he went inside. "I just don't understand it."

David Castro, 56, of Elmwood Park, is an Army reservist who lives across the street from Almonte. He said he doesn't know the suspect but knows his father and described the family as friendly.

Terrorists' recruiting techniques "almost seem better than the U.S. Army," Castro said. "This is happening not just in bad neighborhoods. This is happening in good neighborhoods like this one."

Alessa lived with his parents in the densely populated New York suburb of North Bergen, said Hemant Shah, the family's landlord. Alessa was attending Bergen County Community College, Shah said, and his father worked at a convenience store.

"It's surprising," Shah said of the arrests. "If it's true, it's very scary."

Shah said he often saw Alessa with a man who went by "Omar" and a third man that he now believes may have been the undercover FBI agent. He said he believes the agent was often with the other two over the past year or more.

Shah checked on Alessa's parents Sunday and said they didn't want to talk to reporters.

"His parents, they were trying to put him in the right direction," he said.

While court documents paint a picture of two men deeply committed to terrorism, their training was apparently scattershot. They lifted weights, hiked in the snow at a local park, bought military-style pants and water bottles, played violent video games and watched terrorist videos online.

The men said they planned to get weapons when they went abroad. The only weapons they possessed were two folding knives Alessa said he would use to kill police if they tried to get near him: "I'm-a cut them in half with it, even if I die," Alessa said, according to court documents.

Alessa and Almonte had planned their trip to Somalia for several months, saving thousands of dollars, officials said. Both had bragged about wanting to wage holy war against the United States both at home and internationally, according to a criminal complaint.

Almonte told the undercover agent that three years ago, they traveled to Jordan to try to be recruited with holy warriors and were upset when their contacts refused to recruit them.

Officials said the two men were not planning an imminent attack in the New York-New Jersey area and weren't suspected of plotting any violence on their flights.

The two men knew early on they had come to the attention of law enforcement.

By the end of 2006 agents had talked with Almonte and a family member, and in March 2007 the FBI conducted a consensual search of his computer, revealing documents advocating jihad against the perceived enemies of Islam, court papers show.

Last November, investigators recorded Alessa telling Almonte that lots of people needed to be killed.

"My soul cannot rest until I shed blood," Alessa said, according to court documents. "I wanna, like, be the world's known terrorist."

Somalia, an impoverished East African nation of about 10 million people, has not had a functioning government for more than a decade, although the U.S. is backing a transitional government there. The Pentagon's top commander in the region has included Somalia on a list of countries where clandestine American military operations designed to disrupt militant groups would be targeted.

Almonte told the undercover officer in April that there would soon be American troops in Somalia, which he allegedly said was good because it would not be as gratifying to kill only Africans.

Somalia welcomed the arrests of Alessa and Almonte.

"Foreign terrorists here are an obstacle to lasting peace in Somalia. So we welcome the move and we are calling on all governments to take such steps against al-Shabab and all terrorists at large," said Sheik Abdirisaq Mohamed Qaylow, a spokesman for the Ministry of Information.

Over the past year, a number of Somali youths have traveled from the U.S. back to Somalia to fight with al-Shabab insurgents. At the same time, battle-hardened al-Qaida insurgents have moved out of safe havens along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border into Somalia, where vast ungoverned spaces allow them to train and mobilize recruits without interference.

U.S. authorities, including the FBI, have been working with Somali diasporas, including a large community in Minnesota, to stem the radicalization of young people who are being recruited to join the terror fight.

What kind of religion is so weak as to have to kill those who do not agree with you?? Does that not disgrace Muslims that they can only hold power if they murder those who are of any other faith.
I fully understand how a Muslim could turn to be a Christian. For when Jesus appears in ones life there is no way in which one can not follow him, he is so powerful. Knowing that this young man stood by Jesus unto death is such a powerful thing and they made a what was a small thing in front of a few into a big thing before the world. They did their own advertising for Jesus..

I am very much for Muslims having their own places of worship and doing so in peace because this is what a Christian wants, peace for all, not a few but all. And come the day, they will have to come for me also, as I am a Christian who can not deny that the Lord Jesus told me that he would always be with me. I can not imagine how the knowing the Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace is a reason to kill someone. But we were warned.. sadly if Muslims are killing Christians then they are who revelations speaks of , for if we are killed for money or by random that is one thing, but if we are killed for being Christian that makes our killers the sons of satan.. that would make AL Shabaab or the Lads as they like to call themselves those who Jesus calls the Sons of satan. He warned that we would be killed in his name..by the sons of satan. Hard to see it any other way. Since it was foretold.

But worse they kill their own, murdering other Muslims is so evil that there just is no word for it, it is very hard to believe how they murder women and children without so much as a thought to Gods Laws, just their own twisted laws they twist from doctrine they do not understand. My heart goes out to the Muslim people, they Love their Father and try to worship him and yet they must watch those who claim to be Muslim killing and calling it Good... but this is evil, always has been.

I know that this is not a new thing, lets face it, Christians killing other Christians was something we once did a fair bit of also. We suffer the same ugly things that Muslims suffer.. those within our religion who spout hatred and lead others astray. The Christian Identity for instance, or folks like Arnold Murray, they call themselves Christians but preach the devils message. I am pretty sure the only reason they are not going around killing folks is they could not get away with it and would be punished. They would have no more mercy on those Christians who claim Gods love covers all people than they would any other group they hated.

Hate preaching is always wrong, killing is always wrong... but that is the thing, each person no matter what religion has to make the choice between good and evil... some chose to kill others and some would rather die than be the ones doing the killing. Not hard to figure out who are the sons of satan and who are the sons of light. Those who keep the ten commandments are those who love the Lord, the rest are followers of satan. So simple and yet others can twist it into their doctrine.. and try and pretend that their God wants them to murder innocent children. Wonder what they expect from a God who loves child murderers and rapists? What do they think of a God who wishes them to kill when God commanded them to treat others as they would like to be treated, who is this God who defies the commandments? Promises virgins to those who kill and break Gods commandments. Do they not see how evil that is, how wrong, who would do such a thing.. and yet it is done.
And worse is yet to come…because we have feared them and allowed them to grow into this monster . Our fear is our own failure to the Lord for he says not to fear evil, but we have and we have allowed them to continue to kill in the name of the Lord.. God help us.

KAMPALA, Uganda – Bombs exploded at two sites in Uganda's capital late Sunday as people watched the World Cup final on TV, killing at least 30 people. At least three Americans — part of a church group from Pennsylvania — were among the wounded. Police Chief Kale Kaihura said he believed that Somalia's most feared militia — al-Shabab, which has pledged loyalty to al-Qaida — could be behind the attacks.

One of the bombs went off at an Ethiopian restaurant in Kampala, Uganda's capital. Al-Shabab views Ethiopia as an enemy. The second blast went off at a restaurant called the Kyadondo Rugby Club.

Kaihura said 14 people were killed at the restaurant, and that he believed the toll at the Rugby Club was far higher than 14, though he did not have an exact number.

At the scenes of the two blasts chairs were overturned. Blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor.

Among the wounded was Kris Sledge, 18, who said a group of six Americans had been watching the World Cup at the Ethiopian restaurant. Sledge, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, had been part of a church group in the country for three weeks. They were supposed to leave Uganda on Tuesday. Three Americans in his group were wounded.

"I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running," Sledge said from the hospital. His right leg was wrapped and he had burns on his face. "I love the place here but I'm wondering why this happened and who did this ... At this point we're just glad to be alive."

Al-Shabab is Somalia's most dangerous militant group, one that militant veterans of the Afghan, Pakistan and Iraq conflicts have helped train, according to international officials.

If Kaihura's early suspicions that al-Shabab was responsible prove true, it would be the first time the group has carried out attacks outside of Somalia.

In Mogadishu, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, an al-Shabab commander, told The Associated Press early Monday that he was happy with the attacks in Uganda. Issa refused to confirm or deny that al-Shabab was responsible for the bombings.

"Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah's anger be upon those who are against us," Sheik said.

During prayers on Friday, another al-Shabab commander, Sheik Muktar Robow, had called for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi — two nations that contribute troops to the African Union peacekeeping force in Mogadish

In addition to its troops in Mogadishu, Uganda also hosts Somali soldiers trained in U.S. and European backed training programs.

On Sunday, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. was prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the Ugandan government.

"The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks, and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured," Vietor said.

Kenya's foreign minister, Moses. M. Wetangula, told The Associated Press last week that enough veteran militants from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts have relocated to Somalia to spark worry inside the international community.

International militants have flocked to Somalia because the country's government controls only a few square miles of the capital, Mogadishu, leaving most of the rest of the country as lawless territory where insurgents can train and plan attacks unimpeded.

Somali President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed on Saturday appealed for the international community to do more to help his country fight al-Qaida linked militants. There are currently about 6,000 African Union peacekeepers in the country.

KAMPALA, Uganda – An al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group suspected in twin bombings in Uganda's capital that killed 64 people watching the World Cup final endorsed the attacks on Monday but stopped short of claiming responsibility, as Uganda's president vowed to hunt down those responsible.

The blasts came two days after a commander with the Somali group, al-Shabab, called for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi, two nations that contribute troops to the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

The attacks also raise concerns about the capabilities of al-Shabab, which the U.S. State Department has declared a terrorist organization. If confirmed that the group carried out the attacks, it would be the first time al-Shabab has struck outside Somalia.

In Mogadishu, Somalia, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, an al-Shabab commander, told The Associated Press early Monday that he was happy with the attacks in Uganda but refused to confirm or deny that al-Shabab was responsible.

"Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah's anger be upon those who are against us," Sheik said.

Kampala's police chief, Kale Kaihura, said he believed al-Shabab could be responsible.

A California-based aid group, meanwhile, said one of its American workers was among the dead. Police said Ethiopian, Indian and Congolese nationals were also among those killed and wounded, police said.

Ugandan government spokesman Fred Opolot said Monday there were indications that two suicide bombers took part in the late Sunday attacks, which left nearly 60 others wounded.

Blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor among overturned chairs at the scenes of the blasts, which went off as people watched the game between Spain and the Netherlands. The attack on the rugby club, where crowds sat outside watching a large-screen TV, left 49 dead, police said. Fifteen others were killed in the restaurant explosion.

"We were enjoying ourselves when a very noisy blast took place," said Andrew Oketa, one of the hospitalized survivors. "I fell down and became unconscious. When I regained, I realized that I was in a hospital bed with a deep wound on my head."

Several Americans from a Pennsylvania church group were wounded in the restaurant attack including Kris Sledge, 18, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He said from a hospital bed afterward that he was "just glad to be alive."

Florence Naiga, 32, a mother of three children, said her husband had gone to watch the World Cup final at the rugby club.

"He did not come back. I learnt about the bomb blasts in the morning. When I went to police they told me he was among the dead," she said.

Invisible Children, a San Diego, California-based aid group that helps child soldiers, identified the dead American as one of its workers, Nate Henn, who was killed on the rugby field. Henn, 25, was a native of Wilmington, Delaware.

"From traveling the United States without pay advocating for the freedom of abducted child soldiers in Joseph Kony's war, to raising thousands of dollars to put war-affected Ugandan students in school, Nate lived a life that demanded explanation. He sacrificed his comfort to live in the humble service of God and of a better world, and his is a life to be emulated," the group said in a statement on its website.

Kony heads the Lord's Resistance Army, which has waged one of Africa's longest and most brutal rebellions, in northern Uganda.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni toured the blast sites Monday and said that the terrorists behind the bombings should fight soldiers, not "people who are just enjoying themselves."

"We shall go for them wherever they are coming from," Museveni said. "We will look for them and get them as we always do."

Ugandan army spokesman Felix Kulayigye said it was too early to speculate about any military response to the attacks.

Somalia's president condemned the blasts and described the attack as "barbaric."

Al-Shabab, which wants to overthrow Somalia's weak, U.N.-backed government, is known to have links with al-Qaida. Al-Shabab also counts militant veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts among its ranks.

Al-Shabab's fighters, including two recruited from the Somali communities in the United States, have carried out multiple suicide bombings in Somalia.

Uganda's government spokesman said the first blast occurred at the Ethiopian Village restaurant at 10:55 p.m. Two more blasts happened at the rugby field 20 minutes later, he said.

Ethiopia, which fought two wars with Somalia, is a longtime enemy of al-Shabab and other Somali militants who accuse their neighbor of meddling in Somali affairs. Ethiopia had troops in Somalia between December 2006 to January 2009 to back Somalia's fragile government against the Islamic insurgency. Ethiopia later withdrew its troops under an intricate peace deal mediated by the United Nations.

In addition to Uganda's troops in Mogadishu, Uganda also hosts Somali soldiers trained in U.S. and European-backed programs.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. was prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the Ugandan government.

President Barack Obama was "deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks," Vietor said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton joined Obama in offering condolences and added, "The United States stands with Uganda. We have a long-standing, close friendship with the people and government of Uganda and will work with them to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice."

Officials said the Sunday attacks will not affect the African Union summit being held in Uganda from July 19-27. Many African leaders are expected to attend.

"The summit will go on. The AU and African countries have the resolve to fight terrorism with the international community," said Ramtane Lamamra, the AU's peace and security commissioner.

WASHINGTON – The government announced Thursday that it has charged 14 people as participants in "a deadly pipeline" to Somalia that routed money and fighters from the United States to the terrorist group al-Shabab.

The indictments unsealed in Minneapolis, San Diego and Mobile, Ala., reflect "a disturbing trend" of recruitment efforts targeting U.S. residents to become terrorists, Attorney General Eric Holder told a news conference. In one case, two women pleaded for money "to support violent jihad in Somalia," according to an indictment.

The attorney general credited Muslim community leaders in the United States for regularly denouncing terrorists and for providing critical assistance to law enforcement to help disrupt terrorist plots and combat radicalization. "We must ... work to prevent this type of radicalization from ever taking hold," Holder said.

At least seven of the 14 people charged are U.S. citizens and 10, all from Minnesota, allegedly left the United States to join al-Shabab. Seven of the 10 had been charged previously in the probe.

Al-Shabab is a Somali insurgent faction embracing a radical form of Islam similar to the harsh, conservative brand practiced by Afghanistan's Taliban regime. Its fighters, numbering several thousand strong, are battling Somalia's weakened government and have been branded a terrorist group with ties to al-Qaida by the U.S. and other Western countries.

Terrorist organizations such as al-Shabab continue to radicalize and recruit U.S. citizens and others to train and fight with them, said Sean Joyce, the FBI's executive assistant director for the national security branch.

One of two indictments issued in Minnesota alleges that two Somali women who were among those charged, and others, went door to door in Minneapolis; Rochester, Minn., and elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada to raise funds for al-Shabab's operations in Somalia. The indictment says the women — the only two of the 14 defendants still in the United States — raised the money under false pretenses, claiming it would go to the poor and needy, and used phony names for recipients to conceal that the money was going to al-Shabab.

Omar Hammami, who is now known as Abu Mansour al-Amriki, or "the American," was charged in Mobile, Ala. He has become one of al-Shabab's most high-profile members. He appeared in a jihadist video in May 2009.

At the news conference, Holder said Hammami has appeared in several propaganda videos for al-Shabab and "has assumed an operational role in that organization."

Hammami grew up in the middle-class town of Daphne, Ala., and attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where he was president of the Muslim Student Association nine years ago. Hammami, 26, enrolled at the university in 2001 but left in 2002; school officials said they have been unaware of his whereabouts since then.

Hammami's father, Shafik, is an engineer with the state highway department who also has served as president of the Islamic Society of Mobile. Shafik Hammami confirmed his relationship to Omar Hammami in e-mail exchanges with The Associated Press earlier this year but declined further comment.

In San Diego, prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging Jehad Serwan Mostafa, 28, with conspiring to provide material support to al-Shabab. Mostafa is believed to be in Somalia.

One of the Minnesota indictments alleges that the two women, Amina Farah Ali and Hawo Mohamed Hassan, raised money by making direct appeals to people in teleconferences "in which they and other speakers encouraged financial contributions to support violent jihad in Somalia."

During one teleconference, the indictment says, Ali told others "to forget about the other charities" and focus on "the jihad."

The indictment says Ali and others sent the funds to al-Shabab through various hawalas, money transfer businesses that are a common source of financial transactions in the Islamic world. Ali is accused of sending $8,608 to al-Shabab on 12 occasions between Sept. 17, 2008, through July 5, 2009.

The fundraising operation in Minnesota reached into Ohio, where a Columbus resident helped collect donations for al-Shabab, according to one of the indictments unsealed in Minneapolis.

During appearances by Ali and Hassan before a federal judge in St. Paul, Minn., prosecutors didn't seek detention for either woman. A judge set several conditions, including barring travel outside Minnesota.

Ali's attorney said she denied the allegations. Asked whether she understood the allegations, Ali said: "I do not know — however, I think maybe because of my faith."

At one point, speaking through a translator, Ali said: "Allah is my attorney."

She said she worked in home health care and had lived in Rochester for 11 years. Hassan said she was self-employed, running a day care.

After the FBI searched Ali's home in 2009, she allegedly contacted an al-Shabab leader in southern Somalia and said: "I was questioned by the enemy here. ... They took all my stuff and are investigating it ... Do not accept calls from anyone."

Abdifatah Abdinur, a Somali community leader in Rochester, Minn., said Ali was known in the community as the go-to person if local Somalis had clothes or other goods to donate.

"If you have clothes, you give them to her," said Abdinur. "If you have shoes, give them to her." Abdinur said Ali was also a religious speaker who preached to women in the area. "I was surprised, as almost everybody was (to learn) that she was sending clothes to al-Shabab," Abdinur said.

Roughly 20 men from the U.S. — all but one of Somali descent — left Minnesota from December 2007 through October 2009 to join al-Shabab, officials have said.

On Thursday, a newly released State Department annual report on worldwide terrorism noted with concern that al-Qaida, particularly in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, appeared to be attracting growing numbers of radicalized Americans to its cause.

A Somali Christian leader has condemned the halting of the work of three relief organisations in Somalia by Al Shabaab, an Islamic militant group, which alleged the agencies were propagating Christianity - writes Fredrick Nzwili.

"Now that they have suspended their work, it is the local people who will suffer," Pastor Ahmed Abukar Mukhtar, the leader in exile of a small Christian community in Somalia, told ENInews in Nairobi last week.

Abukar, who fled Somalia for Kenya, criticised Al Shabaab, which controls most of southern Somalia, for claiming that the agencies engaged in attempting to convert Muslims, who account for almost all of Somalia's people.

"I think the allegations are not true. They have used this excuse to expel the agencies," said Abukar.

On 8 August, Harakat Al Shabaab Al-Mujahideen (Movement of Warrior Youth) demanded that World Vision, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), and Diakonia, a Swedish agency, immediately cease operations in Somalia.

"Acting as missionaries under the guise of humanitarian work, the organisations have been spreading their corrupted ideologies in order to taint the pure creed of the Muslims in Somalia," Al Shabaab said in a statement.

Bishop Giorgio Bertin of Djibouti, who is the Roman Catholic apostolic administrator for Somalia, told ENInews he condemned the "intolerant approach" of Al Shabaab in forcing out the three agencies.

"Of course [the agencies] were inspired by their faith," said Bertin. "But since they were giving a good service according to international humanitarian criteria, they are not to be impeded in their charitable work."

In a 9 August statement, World Vision said keys to its offices and assets were taken from staff by Al Shabaab. It said that its operations in affected areas of Somalia have been temporarily suspended while it plans its next steps.

"World Vision is surprised and disappointed by the move, which is apparently based on false accusations of spreading Christianity," the agency said.

It quoted its Somalia programme director, Chris Smoot, as saying that while World Vision is a Christian organisation, "we have specific policies that prohibit proselytising and we are a signatory to the Red Cross code of conduct that guarantees impartiality in our distribution of aid".

ADRA, which has worked in Somalia since 1992, said closing operations in south-central Somalia, where it has been rehabilitating wells, working to provide livelihoods and increasing access to education, would adversely affect 180,000 people.

It noted that it is a signatory to the code of conduct that bans proselytising.

Diakonia, a Swedish Christian development agency that has been working in Somalia since 1994, said, "Our efforts are aimed at people harmed by poverty, oppression and violence in various forms, regardless of their faith, skin colour or gender. A diversity of religious convictions and non-religious organisations is represented in our network."

In fact the opposite is true, I see a Muslim woman in the street with her children and it is a sense of relief that she is here and not over there where she would not be safe and at the mercy of madmen.. MOGADISHU, Somalia – A suicide bomber and gunmen wearing military uniforms attacked a hotel near Somalia's presidential palace Monday, sparking a one-hour gun battle with security forces. At least 32 people were killed, including six Somali parliamentarians.

Witnesses described a horrific scene of dead bodies throughout the Muna Hotel and guests scrambling to safety by escaping out of windows.

The multi-pronged assault came less than 24 hours after the country's most dangerous militant group — al-Shabab, a group allied with al-Qaida — threatened a "massive" war against what it labeled as invaders, a reference to the 6,000 African Union troops in Mogadishu.

The attack on the Muna Hotel raised the two-day toll to at least 70 people, a high number even by Mogadishu's violent standards. Fighting that rocked Mogadishu on Monday killed 40 people, health officials said.

Somalia's deputy prime minister told The Associated Press that 19 civilians, six members of parliament, five security forces and two hotel workers were killed in the attack — a total of 32. Two attackers also were killed, said Abdirahman Haji Aden Ibi, the deputy prime minister. A government statement said 31 people were killed.

An 11-year-old shoe shine boy and a woman selling tea in front of the hotel were among the dead, African Union spokesman Maj. Barigye Bahoku said.

"They have no motive other than to terrorize the Somali people. This is a deplorable act in this holy month of Ramadan. It shows their brutality and lack of respect for humanity," said Abdirahman Omar Osman, Somalia's information minister.

A survivor described a frenzied, one-hour battle inside the four-floor, $10-a-night hotel.

Saynab Qayad, a member of parliament staying at the hotel, said she was jolted awake by the popping sound of bullets. Three members of parliament staying on the fourth floor had drawn their guns while other guests scrambled to safety by escaping out the windows, she said.

"Smoke filled my room after bullets smashed my window. I hid myself in a corner of the room. Then a guest next door came to my door, screaming 'Come out! Come out!' And when I came out bullets continued to fly around.

"I went back to my room and locked my door. Shortly afterward, the hotel staff asked me to come down and put me in a room at the second floor with four other survivors," she said. "The body of a member of parliament was lying at that small room's door."

Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, a spokesman for the al-Shabab militia, said that members of the group's "special forces" had carried out the attack against those "aiding the infidels."

While Mogadishu has a small, government-controlled zone near the seaside airport, al-Shabab operatives frequently infiltrate the area, and the attack is only the latest proof that al-Shabab has molded itself into a full-fledged insurgent force capable of daring, complex assaults.

In a similar attack in December, a suicide bomber detonated himself at a university graduation ceremony near Tuesday's hotel attack, killing 24 people, including three government ministers, medical students and doctors.

In its first international attack, al-Shabab last month claimed responsibility for twin bombings in Uganda's capital during the World Cup final, explosions that killed 76 people who had gathered to watch the televised match. Al-Shabab said the attack was in retaliation for Uganda's role in the African Union force in Mogadishu.

Militant veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are believed to be helping train members of al-Shabab, which has pledged allegiance to al-Qaida.

Somalia has not had an effective government for 19 years. Islamic insurgents led by al-Shabab have been trying to topple the government from Mogadishu since January 2007. The AU force has ensured the government stays because the force's mandate is to protect key government officials and installations such as the air and sea port in Mogadishu.

ban men, women
from shaking hands

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalis say Islamist insurgents have banned unrelated men and women from shaking hands, speaking or walking together.

Residents of the southern Somali town of Jowhar said Saturday that the al-Shabab insurgents threatened to whip, imprison or execute anyone found breaking the recent edicts.

Resident Hussein Ali says he will no longer greet women he knows for fear of punishment.

Student Hamdi Osman says gunmen are searching buses for improperly dressed women or women traveling alone. She says she was once beaten for wearing Somali traditional dress instead of the long, shapeless black robes favored by the fighters.

The insurgents have already banned women from working in public, leaving many families completely destitute.

Al Shabaab: Somali women can't work

ISMAYO, Somalia (UPI) -- Al-Shabaab, the Somali insurgent group with ties to al-Qaida, banned women Tuesday from holding jobs in Kismayo, a woman affected by the order said.

Shabelle Media Network said the woman, who did not want her name used, got in touch to report jobs had been closed to women, including working at the port, in cafeterias and selling khat in the market. She said some women in the town went to the al-Shabaab judge and asked him, apparently without success, to make the rules less restrictive.

Many Somali families are dependent on women's earnings given the longtime political and economic chaos in the country.

Kismayo, a seaport near the mouth of the Jubba River, is Somalia's third-largest city with a population of about 70,000 people.

Militants in a town in war-torn southern Somalia have imposed an unthinkably harsh restriction on the women who live there by refusing to allow them to work, leaving many families destitute. The country is partially controlled by the al-Qaeda-backed militant group Al-Shabaab, which is currently trying to overthrow the weak, UN-backed government, has imposed other harsh restrictions in various towns, including forcing women to wear long, heavy black robes and threatening unrelated men and women who walk or speak together publicly with beating or even execution.

A woman in the town of Kismayo who asked not to be identified reported that women had been forbidden to work in the port, in cafeterias, or sell food on the street. This is, naturally, devastating for families that depend heavily on women's income for their survival, and women have to decide whether they will risk death in order to feed their children and husbands.

The clothing restrictions have also been difficult for women who can't afford to buy a new robe. One woman said that she was beaten for wearing Somali traditional dress on a bus instead of veiling completely.

The Somali insurgents are thought to be unpopular because of the harsh and arbitrary restrictions, which often vary from commander to commander, and also because they kidnap children to become fighters. They have also banned movies, music and bras, saying that they are un-Islamic, even though most Somali Muslims are Sufi, which has a rich musical tradition.

"The last time I listened a song or music, was two years ago, before the insurgents managed the full control of my village," said one man. Now, he told the BBC, the sound of music makes him afraid.

There are some African Union troops in the capital, but they're clearly not making a difference for most Somalis, who are subject to the whims of a cruel rebel government. It's obvious that for Somalis, these arbitrary restrictions can mean life or death.

Mberwa’s relative, whose location is also withheld for security reasons, said a “good Samaritan” in Mogadishu was caring for her four children, and that they continue to weep and cry out for their mother.

Al Shabaab insurgents control much of southern and central Somalia and have embarked on a campaign to rid the country of its hidden Christian population. With estimates of al Shabaab’s size ranging from 3,000 to 7,000, the insurgents seek to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law).

Al Shabaab was among several splinter groups that emerged after Ethiopian forces removed the Islamic Courts Union, a group of sharia courts, from power in Somalia in 2006. Said to have ties with al Qaeda, al Shabaab has been designated a terrorist organization by several western governments.

The transitional government in Mogadishu fighting to retain control of the country treats Christians little better than the al Shabaab insurgents do. While proclaiming himself a moderate, President Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed has embraced a version of sharia that mandates the death penalty for those who leave Islam.

Only satan asks that we kill folks.. because he hates God and wants us to break his commandments.. we shall let you become Muslim and still love you, we shall let you become Jewish and we shall still love you, if you become atheists we shall still love you.. for God tells us to love one another.. and NOT to kill .. but satan says kill, and kill many not just a few.. and itchy ears want to hear that.. murderers and rapists hear only satan because it is who they WANT to hear. They are his children and he is their father.. Jesus says that.. but I guess they would have Killed Jesus also.. if their father satan had of told them to.

Shame on such evil men such as Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed , he follows no one but satan..he does not follow Gods ten commandments so he does evil acts.. God never said to kill Christians.. ever.. some man may have said that, but me I follow no man.. and he makes Islam look weak and foolish.. like you can not keep those in this religion without killing the ones who leave... shows no faith in God what so ever.. but then I guess if you are following satan what need do you have of Gods Commandments?

Something that this fellow has forgotten, God can put his people anywhere.. and when he sends Jesus to a person and you come and kill that person, you are sending them back to their Father who is in Heaven. It is hard for those who are left behind, and they shall remember your evil, but for the one gone to God... well you have sold your soul to satan to send a Christian home. It is where we long to be, in our Fathers embarce. Is that not where Muslims wish to be? But as a Christian I would not dare to even kill the smallest of my Fathers creatures, for his love of them. I would not show such disrespect, such evil. I love my God with all of my heart and follow his ten commandments as Jesus told me to do.. not sure what Mohammad told his people but some of them seem to have missed the message of Love and seem to have fallen into satans spell of murder and rape.. and they shall never see heaven. They have been tricked as it was warned would happen..

Do not get me wrong, I know there are millions of God fearing , Jesus loving Muslims. My heart goes out to them. Do not think I do not understand.. no one knows better than a Christian that your religion can be highjacked by the children of satan. We had a Childrens Crusade.. can you imagine anything more evil than that? We burned men, women and children as witches.. more of satans work, and we had Christians killing millions of Christians.. our history is full of such evil.. because satan works very hard to drag us away from the teaching of Jesus. So please understand that I do not say this against a religion but against satans works.. but I leave it to my Father to deciede who shall see heaven and who shall see hell.. and my Father reads hearts not deeds or laws.. hearts, those who are killers shall be revealed to him.. revenge is mine sayth the Lord. Come Judgement Day many shall know that their crimes are not hidden, all shall be seen.

I know this because when I was born again I got to see myself in the eyes of my Father and I was ashamed. I concidered myself a good person.. I was wrong. There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing yourself as God see you.. today I live every day knowing that all I do is seen and I try not to do things that will shame me before my Father. I know he loves me, but I also know that if I was to hate my brothers and sisters than my Father would be ashamed of me, I could not bare that, and because of his love it is impossible anyway.. I have always loved my brothers and sisters even before I was born again. But I will tell you ..do not allow yourself to fall into the hands of the living God unless you are ready to see what you have done.. all that you have done.

And as Christians we expected to be hated.. Jesus was, and the devil worked hard to get him to fall into his traps. Of course he has to get others to do his killing.. and the tempations of pride and envy he puts before those are the same tricks he tried on Jesus. But Jesus used scripture to defeat the devil.. So who has he got doing his dirty work today.. well look around and see. Getting Muslims extremeist do do his work is a two fold winner for him, makes Islam look evil and gets those Christians killed like satan so likes.

Think how angry God must be with them, killing not just his Christians but his Muslims who pray to him five times a day! Shame on them for falling for the works of satan, where is their love of God, their faith, their honour! But revenge is mine sayth the Lord so I guess we will just have to keep loving God and all his people while the children of satan do their evil. Our reward will not be on this world. And those who are not helping the widows and orphans but make widows and orphans shall face their God.

Somali women say Islamists becoming more draconian

Women living in areas controlled by Somalia’s Islamists say they are increasingly the target of more draconian rules meted out by the rebels bent on enforcing their ideologies, Reuters reports.

In the latest decree by the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group that governs most of southern Somalia, women in the seaside town of Kismayu have been banned from carrying out barter trade with the male crews of ships calling at the port.

Many Kismayu women, mostly widowed or divorced, have survived for years solely from selling or bartering vegetables and fruits for fuel and other commodities from ship crews.

The al Shabaab group — which means “the youth” in Arabic — have in the past banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and watching soccer.

“We have been born and raised as Muslims and we don’t know where Islam says women can’t work. They have taken these ideologies from outside Somalia, from the Taliban and other militants,” said Abdiwahab Abdi Samad, professor of history at the University of Nairobi in neighbouring Kenya.

DADAAB, Kenya — Refugee Barwago Mohamud huddles silently beneath a few blankets stretched over sticks at night, fearing for her life after a neighbor was raped, and a naked woman who had been kidnapped and gang-raped for three days in front of her terrified children was delivered to the medical tent next door.

Only a few hundred feet away stands a newly built camp with a police station, toilet blocks and schools. Neat thornbush fences in the camp separate residential areas for families to move into. But all the facilities are empty. The Kenyan government is refusing to open the new Ifo 2 facility as part of the world's biggest refugee camp, Dadaab, saying the desperate Somali refugees flowing into the country are a security risk.

But for the women and children who fled war and famine and are now forced to build their shelters farther and farther away from the center of the camps, the extension would be a refuge from the armed men who prowl the bush at night. Some may be deserters from Somali forces across the border; others are Kenyan bandits who rob and gang-rape the stream of refugees fleeing the famine in Somalia.

The contrast between the squalid, insecure outskirts of the sprawling camp and the empty, silent facilities shows how regional politics can interfere with aid efforts, causing millions of dollars to be wasted and leaving women and children vulnerable to attack.

"What can we do?" Mohamud asked. "Our neighbors have been raped at night. We are afraid. Some boys are helping watch at night in case of trouble but they also work during the day."

Mohamud and eight other women and girls share their rickety shelter on the outskirts of Dadaab, a camp designed for 90,000 people which now houses around 440,000 refugees. Almost all are from war-ravaged Somalia. Some have been here for more than 20 years, when the country first collapsed into anarchy. But now more than 1,000 are arriving daily, fleeing fighting or hunger.

The U.N. said this month that at least two regions in Somalia are suffering from famine and 11.3 million people in the Horn of Africa need aid.

To help ease the overcrowding, international donors including the U.S. and European Union spent $16 million building the Ifo 2 extension, which could house 40,000 people. But it is still unclear when or if the Kenyan government will open it.

Research shows that women are often attacked when they leave their families to go to the bathroom or gather firewood. When Mohamud's three young daughters need to relieve themselves, she insists on going with them, and takes the only torch the nine women share between them. She has no shoes, so she walks barefoot over the thorny ground.

"Women express a lot of fear about going to the bush. They say there are men with guns there," said Sinead Murray, an aid worker with the International Rescue Committee. Her organization has recorded a spike in rapes and attempted rape. Since the beginning of June, they have had double the number of attacks reported from January-May.

"More and more women are coming forward who have been raped," said Murray, who said consultations with communities show the vast majority of rapes go unreported. Women may not know where to seek help, or fear ostracism by their community.

They are women like Sahan, who was on a bus coming over from Somalia when four gunmen stopped the vehicle. The women were ordered off and raped in the bush for three hours. She has not reported the rape because she was living far away from any medical services on the outskirts of the camp and did not want to leave her family. She asked her last name not be used to protect her privacy.

A reporter for The Associated Press drove around the newly constructed area in Dadaab and found rows of new toilet blocks standing amid the rows of empty lots, where women could more safely go to the bathroom and easily walk to police or medical services if they were attacked.

The Ifo 2 camp also houses a freshly painted primary and secondary school, police station, and headquarters for aid organizations ranging from Handicap International to the Norwegian Refugee Council padlocked shut. A medical facility for Doctors Without Borders lay half-built after aid workers said they were told to stop building early this year. The group now treats people in nearby tents instead.

More than two weeks ago, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga visited Dadaab and said the Ifo 2 extension would open in 10 days. On Saturday, Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua said that no decision had yet been reached.

Kenyan officials have said that they consider the influx of Somalis a security risk because part of the country is held by al-Qaida linked rebels. They also fear that if they provide the schools and medical care lacking in Somalia, families will simply move to Kenya to get better services. The Kenyans want aid agencies to deliver food in Somalia instead but charities face attack by bandits and harassment by Kenyan officials at the border.

But Somalis say they have no other choice than to flee their homes because they will be killed by gunmen or starve to death if they stay at home.

In the meantime, the refugees keep coming as the hunger crisis worsens but there is nowhere for them to go. The camps are full to bursting, and medical staff are setting up tents to treat new arrivals. Women and their children are being forced farther out, away from services and security. Aid agencies are appealing for more donations, unable to use the facilities they built. And Mohamud, whose door is only a blanket draped on a stick, keeps her daughters close and dreads each sunset.

"We are afraid," she said again, as her 13-year-old daughter played in the dirt in front of her. "Maybe they will come back. But we have nowhere else to go."

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The former al-Shabab foot soldiers assigned to a drab cement housing bloc are young — too young. One is only 9, yet they were enforcers of harsh edicts from Islamist militants who are preventing thousands of Somalis from escaping famine.

The Associated Press obtained rare access to the former fighters at a government rehabilitation facility in Mogadishu last week, providing a unique view into the workings of the al-Qaida-linked group whose presence in much of Somalia is stymieing international efforts to provide emergency aid. Millions risk starvation amid Somalia's worst drought in 60 years.

The U.N. declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones on Wednesday and said the crisis is likely to spread across all of southern Somalia in coming weeks. Getting aid to the country has been difficult because al-Shabab controls much of the country's most desperate areas.

The hardline militant group routinely recruits young teenagers, kidnapping them from schools and forcibly removing them from homes. Last week three teenage fighters surrendered to the African Union military force during a military offensive.

The most recent arrival at the rehab center, 17-year-old Abshir Mohammed Abdi, said "there was no life, no prospects" inside al-Shabab, which he belonged to for 1½ years before escaping to the camp last week. Abdi is from the country's south — Kismayo — where Somalia's famine is hitting hardest.

Abdi said many there are suffering, with al-Shabab fighters trying to stop the flow of refugees toward food, an outflow that threatens to diminish the population from which al-Shabab draws its conscripts and collects its taxes. Al-Shabab has denied a famine is taking place.

"Even with women and children suffering from drought, al-Shabab would stop them, stop them, stop them until they couldn't stop them anymore," Abdi said, suggesting that the wave of famine refugees was too much for the militants to stanch.

Somalis who have fled the famine zones and reached Mogadishu told AP that militants are threatening refugees who leave the south and often stopping — and sometimes killing — the men, leading to a disproportionate number of women and children in displaced-persons camps in the capital. One of the young former fighters, who spoke to AP through an interpreter while standing under a shade tree at the rehabilitation facility, said al-Shabab also uses threats to keep Somali men within the famine zones.

"What they would tell the men is that your women and children would be killed if you leave," said Ali Hassan, who like many of the former teen fighters wore a colorful track suit that looked like it was made by Nike but instead said "Nile Sports."

The two dozen young men, mostly teens, said there were killers among them, though no one dared specify who. One bearded fighter in his 20s suggested that he had carried out beheadings.

What is striking about the former al-Shabab members is how young they are. The youngest at the center is Liban Mohammed, a shy boy of 9. Al-Shabab used him as a spy.

Most children recruited by armed groups in Somalia appear to be between 12 and 18, though some are as young as 8, Amnesty International said in a report last month. Conscripting or enlisting children under the age of 15 is a war crime, the group noted.

"This is a never-ending conflict, where children are experiencing unimaginable horrors on a daily basis," said Amnesty's Michelle Kagari. "They risk becoming a lost generation if the world continues to ignore the war crimes affecting so many of them."

The children, who come from a desperately poor region where government can't function, are lured into joining al-Shabab through the promises of phones and money. Forcible recruitment and kidnapping are common. The government also stands accused of using child soldiers.

One official who is helping watch after the former child soldiers said executions were a part of al-Shabab's recruitment process, in order to instill fear. Many saw their friends die, he said.

"What they were promised was riches, and as the drought kicked in they were given handfuls of rice as payment," said the man, who did not give his name.

There are more than 160 former al-Shabab fighters in the government rehabilitation program. Many here say they hope to get an education, though some, knowing little but war during their young lives, profess that they want to join Somalia's military and fight back against al-Shabab.

Hassan said he had fought alongside Arab militants and fighters from Kenya, and that he had seen Omar Hammami, an American al-Shabab leader known as Abu Mansur al-Amriki. Hassan and many of the other teens said al-Shabab treats their youngest soldiers very poorly.

"We don't matter. We're taught how to load and unload a gun. I want a future for myself," Hassan said, explaining why he left.

Al-Shabab is split into about three main factions, the former fighters said. One top leader, often referred to as al-Shabab's No. 2, is Sheik Mukhtar Robow, who is seen by the international community as a more moderate al-Shabab leader, one that aid groups have been able to work with in the past.

A leader like Robow could be a way for aid groups banned from southern Somalia to find a way in to distribute food aid. But one former fighter, 24-year-old Abdullahi Dahir, said aid groups shouldn't trust Robow's word, even if he tells them that they can enter.

The teens seem content at the government-run facility, if not a little bored. There is little for them to do and rehabilitation programs are not yet up to full speed, despite the program being more than six months old.

Government spokesman Abdirahman Omar Osman said that more than 50 al-Shabab fighters have defected and joined government forces since the drought began. He said the government needs more money to cover the needs of the program.

For the former fighters, once they're in, it is their only way forward. Marked men — or boys, in many cases — they must stay in government-controlled territory.

"If I walk out of here I'll be killed," said one former fighter who didn't give his name. "Where can I go?"

NAIROBI, Kenya, — A kidnapped Christian convert from Islam was found decapitated on Sept. 2 on the outskirts of Hudur City in Bakool region, in southwestern Somalia.

Juma Nuradin Kamil was forced into a car by three suspected Islamic extremists from the al Shabaab terrorist group on Aug. 21, area sources said. After members of his community thoroughly combed the area looking for him, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 2 one of them found Kamil’s body dumped on a street.

The kidnapping and subsequent manner of murder suggests that al Shabaab militants had been monitoring him, Christian leaders said. Muslim extremists from al Shabaab, a militant group with ties to al Qaeda, have vowed to rid Somalia of Christianity, and they control the area some 400 kilometers from Mogadishu.

A Christian who saw Kamil’s body said it bore the marks of an al Shabaab killing, according to a leader in Somalia’s underground church who lives in another city.

“It is usual for the al Shabaab to decapitate those they suspect to have embraced the Christian faith, or sympathizers of western ideals,” the leader said. “Our brother accepted the Christian faith three years ago and was determined in his faith in God. We greatly miss him.”

An area resident said he was on his way to his house when he saw a crowd of stunned people gazing at the corpse.

“I could not immediately comprehend what might have gone wrong, only to learn that someone had been decapitated,” the resident said. “His head was put on his chest.”

A Christian said the area community initially did not bury the body out of fear of al Shabaab extremists seeing them associated with a newly discovered convert to Christianity.

“The community feared burying him, and his body lay in the open for two days before unknown people buried him secretly,” he said.

Another Christian convert who lives in another city said Kamil had become a Christian three years ago.

“This is very sad news for the community,” he said.

A source in Mogadishu with ties to Somalia’s underground church confirmed the murder of Kamil.

With estimates of al Shabaab’s size ranging from 3,000 to 7,000, the insurgents seek to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law), but the transitional government in Mogadishu fighting to retain control of the country treats Christians little better than the al Shabaab extremists do. While proclaiming himself a moderate, President Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed has embraced a version of sharia that mandates the death penalty for those who leave Islam.

Al Shabaab was among several splinter groups that emerged after Ethiopian forces removed the Islamic Courts Union, a group of sharia courts, from power in Somalia in 2006. Al Shabaab has been designated a terrorist organization by several western governments.

In the Lower Shabele region of Somalia earlier this year, two Muslim extremists murdered a member of a secret Christian community, sources said. An area source told Compass two al Shabaab militants shot 21-year-old Hassan Adawe Adan in Shalambod town after entering his house on April 18.

In Warbhigly village on the outskirts of Mogadishu, a mother of four was killed for her Christian faith on Jan. 7 by Islamic extremists from al Shabaab, a relative said. The relative, who requested anonymity, said Asha Mberwa, 36, was killed when the Islamic extremists cut her throat in front of villagers who came out of their homes as witnesses.

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 10 (Compass Direct News) – A Somali convert from Islam was paraded before a cheering crowd last month and publicly flogged as a punishment for embracing a “foreign religion,” sources said.

Sofia Osman, a 28-year-old Christian from Janale city in Somali’as Lower Shabelle region, had been taken into custody by Islamic extremist al Shabaab militants in November; the public whipping was meant to mark her release. She received 40 lashes on Dec. 22 while jeered by spectators.

“Osman was whipped 40 lashes at 3 p.m., but she didn’t tell what other humiliations she had suffered while in the hands of the militants,” an eyewitness, told Compass, adding that whipping left her bleeding. “I saw her faint. I thought she had died, but soon she regained consciousness and her family took her away.”

The whipping was administered in front of hundreds of spectators after Osman was released from her month-long custody in al Shabaab camps. Nursing her injuries at her family’s home, in the days after the punishment she would not talk to anyone and looked dazed, a source close in touch with the family said. She has since been relocated.

“Please pray for her quick recovery,” the source said.

Janale, one Somalia’s major cities, is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Mogadishu.

Osman became a Christian four years ago and was a member of the underground church in the war-torn Horn of Africa country largely controlled by the al Qaeda-linked militants from al Shabaab.

The al Shabaab militia is being hunted down by Kenya Defense Forces in southern Somalia following the extremists’ incursions into Kenya. They had killed and kidnapped tourists and aid workers inside Kenya, prompting military forces to formally enter into war to secure its borders.

In response, the al Shabaab militants have targeted churches in northern Kenyan towns such as Garissa in the hope of dividing Kenyans along religious lines. The Kenyan public, however, is largely backed the government decision to pursue the militants deep into Somalia.

Why is it that a million Christians could become Muslims and we Christians would not raise our hands against them... I will tell you.. We follow Gods laws... and we follow his son. Only a fool thinks that they could whip a women whom God has chosen to follow his son. I know because I did not believe in God and My Father changed all of that with one touch.. and then he gave me his son to follow also.

Because of this I would never harm any of Gods creatures... not even a mouse. So to whip one of Gods Children to me is so evil that I could not even imagine doing such a thing.

Good God fearing Muslims fear these evil men as much as the rest of the world... my heart breaks for them. I remember when I became a born again Christian I was so excited.. and then I read our history and I was heart broken at the evil done in the name of our Lord. And that evil that is still being done in his name.. I could not understand it then and I can not understand it now. Real Muslims must feel the same way when they hear what is being done in the name of Allah by satans children.

All of us who Love God must stand together and keep our Love of God and each other in our hearts..

rebels ban
International Red Cross

Somalia's Islamist Shebab rebels on Monday banned the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ordering it to close its emergency relief operations in the war-torn regions it controls.

The Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab said in a statement it had "decided to fully terminate the contract" of the ICRC, claiming it had handed out outdated food and had "falsely accused the mujahideen of hindering food distribution".

Hardline Shebab gunmen control large parts of south and central Somalia, a region the United Nations says is in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with three areas hit by famine and nearly 250,000 people facing starvation.

The ICRC had already suspended food aid to 1.1 million people in southern and central Somalia earlier this month due to obstruction by local militia, including in Shebab-controlled regions.

The aid suspended included food as well as seeds for farmers, and was intended to be given to the thousands struggling from years of war and the impact of a devastating drought that has ravaged Somalia since October 2010.

However, the ICRC had continued to provide emergency aid including supporting health programmes and providing clean water.

But the Shebab said the ICRC had "betrayed the trust" of the insurgents, and said it had set fire to "nearly 2,000 metric tons of expired ICRC rations intended for distribution."

The ICRC is one of the largest providers of emergency aid in Somalia and was one of very few international aid agencies still operating in areas controlled by the extremist Shebab.

Somalia, ravaged by nearly uninterrupted civil war for the past two decades, is one of the most dangerous places in the world for aid workers and one of the regions that needs them most.

For 'Leaving Islam'

Islamic fighters of the militant al-Shabab group have beheaded a devoted Christian for “leaving Islam”, witnesses and other sources said late Saturday, November 17.

Local Christians and Muslims, who were not identified, told reporters that Farhan Haji Mose, 25, was murdered Friday, November 16, in the troubled African nation’s coastal city of Barawa.

The militants reportedly accused the young man of “being a spy and leaving Islam”.

African media quoted witnesses as saying that the Christian’s “body was split into two, then carried away, only to be dumped near the beach.”

MILITANTS SUSPICION

Mose drew suspicion when he returned to Barawa, in Somalia’s Lower Shebelle Region, in December 2011 after spending time in neighboring Kenya, said local Christians who are gathering in underground churches.

This was the fourth Christian known to have been beheaded since September last year, according to a BosNewsLife count.

There was no immediate response from al-Shabab, but the group has vowed to rid Somalia from Christianity.

Earlier this year, al-Shabab militants killed 26-year-old Zakaria Hussein Omar, a Christian relief worker, near the capital Mogadishu.

TEENAGER BEHEADED

The January murder came after the group group beheaded two other Christians in September 2011, including a 17-year-old boy, identified as Guled Jama Muktar, near his home about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from capital Mogadishu.

Militants have also publicly flogged and paraded other Christian converts, according to local Christians.

The latest reported killing came despite claims by Somali and African Union peacekeepers that they have made steady progress ousting al-Shabab militants from key strongholds.

Yet, church leaders have warned that the group remains influential in border areas with Kenya, which supports the battle against al-Shabab.

BORDER ATTACKS

Reverend Wellington Mutiso, head of the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya said this month that the group also “launches border attacks into Kenya with poor youths from Christian backgrounds.

Analysts have also warned of a political battle for control of newly liberated regions in Somalia, which is seen as is posing a challenge for the country’s recently established central government.

Even if Somalia’s United Nations-backed transitional government will eventually rule the nation, concerns remain as it has “embraced a form of Sharia” or Islamic law, that mandates the death penalty for converts from Islam, according to Christian rights activists.

There are said to be fewer than 31,000 Christians in Somalia as many have fled the volatile country, according to advocacy group Release International and other activists.

If Jesus ever said anything that went against what Gods ten commandments say then I would say get behind me satan, because NO prophet can step over Gods laws and make laws of his own..not the Lord Jesus and not Mohammed. Jesus came uphold the ten commandments not to break them. So where do these Muslims think that killing the innocent is going to get them... I grow tried of saying terrorists because almost all the Christians have fled the country.. that tells us it is not a few terrorists but a country that does not protect its citizens. that is at fault. And I am sure many good Muslims have fled from the sharia law along with the Christians.. because they have seen sharia law in action and it is not Gods laws but the laws of men.. which are evil, and the proof of that is that not even Muslims want to live under that law.. the Muslims in Canada demanded that there be NO Sharia law here as that is what they ran away from..and look how good it is doing the countries that are run by sharia law.. not so good, especially for women and children. Give good men good laws, as God gave us, and they will give mercy and justice.

Samantha Lewthwaiter widow of Jermaine Lindsay (one of the suicide bombers who attacked the London Underground in July 2005 and killed 52) known to her follower...s as “dada mzungu” (Swahili for white sister) has become the commander and ‘trainer’ of Al-Shabaab the Somali wing of Al-Qaeda an all-female mujahid suicide bomber team in East Africa as part of global jihad.

She posted a poem on Twitter called “Maybe Paradise Tomorrow”: “Maybe tomorrow it will be Jannah (Islamic paradise), I look around at how beautiful Jihad is, It’s alive in Kenya, It’s alive in me, And I’m breathing Jihad, It’s my time.”

Samantha converted to Islam at 17 and covered herself head-to-toe in a Burka. “I gave my life to Allah and now I serve Allah as his female soldier”. She enrolled in the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and met Jamaican-born Jermaine Lindsay, a fellow Moslem convert through an Islamic Chat Room. They married in 2002 and had two children. In 2007, she disappeared with her children and re-surfaced in 2012 during a grenade attack on a pub in Kenya where witnesses saw Samantha throw grenades into the bar killing three people, including a nine-year-old boy, and maiming 30.

During a raid on Samantha Lewthwaite’s home police found ammunition, bomb-making equipment and a laptop with detailed plans for terror attacks on other targets. The “Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa” is tracking Samantha who stole a passport with the name Natalie Webb, a nurse from Essex. Samantha Lewthwaite is gaining a cult following among other radicalized young women.

Her devoted followers posted: “The kuffar hunt her, but still can’t find her, for Allah protect his warriors,’ one woman posted on an extremist Islamic website. ‘More than four times our white sister has defeated the kuffar. Now every Moslem sister wants to be like our dada mzungu! I will join you white sister. May Allah keep you firm.”
