They Live Remake to Go Without Sunglasses?
News of a remake of director John Carpenter's 1987 cult favorite They Live was rumored in 2008, but news about the project has been quiet since. The original movie saw Roddy "Rowdy" Piper as a drifter who stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see a race of aliens living among us and broadcasting subliminal messages to keep humanity in line.
Producer Eric Newman (The Last Exorcism) was asked about the remake by io9 and revealed that the sunglasses — so critical in Carpenter's original that five-and-a-half minutes of screen time is dedicated to a fight scene where Piper forces a reluctant Keith David to try on the sunglasses — won't likely be used in the remake.
I'd like to say that really, a vagrant wandering around the streets could get you to try on his sunglasses, if he would leave you alone afterwards. He may even pay you $100, "Hey put these on." So we're kind of exploring different versions of what is that thing that allows you to see. But I'm not going to tell you what it is. It might be something different than sunglasses.
The man tasked with imagining another way to see aliens among us is D.B. Weiss, who's currently busy writing the HBO mini-series Game of Thrones. Newman says the project likely won't get started until "next year best case."
